It has the ability to maintain high water retention even at high temperatures, preventing too fast and low penetration of water into the base layer of cement-based construction products, thereby contributing to the open time for hydration of the cement and the formation of a strong and durable cement.

It is also useful as an emulsifier and suspending agent in cosmetics, foodstuffs and other applications. It also acts as a binder in tablet manufacturing, and is a critical component of coatings for medical and industrial equipment. It is often used in the manufacture of honeycomb ceramics, due to its ability to form a stable and dense film on the surface of the product, preventing migration of fluids and chemicals from one surface to another.

The ability of HPMC to retain water in a wide range of temperatures makes it an ideal thickening agent for a variety of applications, such as gypsum-based and ash-calcium-based construction products, especially concrete. Its water retaining capacity is highly temperature-dependent, however, and some special grades can still perform well in high-temperature environments. In gypsum-based plasters, MikaZone(tm) HPMC prevents the premature formation of a plastic gel by slowing down the water vapor migration from the base of the mortar and the rate at which it reaches the surface. It can also improve the stability of the paste by preventing the sintering and densification of the gypsum-calcium aggregates, which results in a longer open time.

In addition to improving the water-holding capacity of cement mortar, the rheology modifying effects of HPMC help maintain a flowable consistency of ceramic glazes during spraying and firing. This ensures that the green body remains smooth and uniform, while supporting good adherence of the glaze to the ceramic surface, thus enhancing the quality of finished products.

The thickening ability of a cellulose ether depends on the type, amount and molecular weight of the cellulose ether. Organic liquids that can be thickened by the addition of HPMC ethers include mixtures of t-butanol/water, acetone/water, glycerin/water and methylene chloride/water. When HPMC ethers are added to these organic liquids, they can cause them to thicken into viscous, still pourable liquids or gels. They can also be used to thicken polar hydrocarbons in the presence of water. The specific characteristics of the resulting thickened organic liquid, gel or slurry depend on the methoxyl and hydroxypropoxyl substitution and the average molecular weight of the HPMC ether. The polarity of the organic liquid is also important in determining its optimum thickening property. In general, a larger molecular weight HPMC ether will provide a higher viscosity increase than a smaller one.
